Meadow Monarch

During autumn, many elk will come down from the mountains to engage in the annual ritual of the rut. This involves forming harems of cows and protecting them from other bulls. Part of this ritual involves bugling out to other bulls to warn them to stay away. This painting shows a bull in the evening light while storm clouds form in the distant mountains.
